Shalom,

In this article, we're going to discuss about the Name "ehyeh-asher-ehyeh".

When Moses asked God about His Name that he will tell to the Israelites, God answered : "ehyeh-asher-ehyeh".

Exo 3:13  KJV
And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?
Exo 3:14  KJV
And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.

Exo 3:13  CJB
Moshe said to God, "Look, when I appear before the people of Isra'el and say to them, 'The God of your ancestors has sent me to you'; and they ask me, 'What is his name?' what am I to tell them?"
Exo 3:14  CJB
God said to Moshe, "Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh [I am/will be what I am/will be]," and added, "Here is what to say to the people of Isra'el: 'Ehyeh [I Am or I Will Be] has sent me to you.' "

Elohim introduced His Name to Moses as : Ehyeh / אהיה

It comes from Hebrew letters :

Aleph :
Transliteration : no sound/silent.

This letter is silent or have no sound.

Hey :

The root of the word אהיה is היה (Hey-Yod-Hey) or (H-Y-H).

The 1st Person
In Hebrew language the 1st person is
אהיה = H-Y-H = eh.yeh = I AM / I WILL / I EXIST. We can see in Exo 4:12.

Exo 4:12  KJV
Now therefore go, and I will be [אהיה - eh.ye] with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say.
Exo 4:12  CJB
Now, therefore, go; and I will be [אהיה - eh.ye] with your mouth and will teach you what to say."
Exo 4:12  Transliteration
ve.a.ta lekh ve.a.no.khi eh.ye im-pi.kha ve.ho.rei.ti.kha a.sher te.da.ber:

The 2nd Person
The 2nd person is תהיה = T-H-Y-H = tih.yeh = YOU ARE / YOU WILL / YOU EXIST. We can see in Exo 4:16.

Exo 4:16  KJV
And he shall be thy spokesman unto the people: and he shall be, even he shall be to thee instead of a mouth, and thou shalt be
[תהיה - tih.ye] to him instead of God.
Exo 4:16  CJB
Thus he will be your spokesman to the people, in effect; for you, he will be a mouth; and for him, you
will be [תהיה - tih.ye] like God.
Exo 4:16  Transliteration
ve.di.ber-hu le.kha el-ha.am ve.ha.ya hu yih.ye-le.kha le.fe ve.a.ta tih.ye-lo le.lo.him:
The 3rd Person
The 3rd person is יהיה = Y-H-Y-H = yih.yeh = HE IS / HE WILL / HE EXIST. We can see also in Exo 4:16.
Exo 4:16  KJV
And he shall be thy spokesman unto the people: and he shall be, even he shall be  [יהיה -
yih.ye] to thee instead of a mouth, and thou shalt be to him instead of God.
Exo 4:16  CJB
Thus he will be your spokesman to the people, in effect; for you, he
will be [יהיה - yih.ye] a mouth; and for him, you will be like God.
Exo 4:16  Transliteration
ve.di.ber-hu le.kha el-ha.am ve.ha.ya hu yih.ye-le.kha le.fe ve.a.ta tih.ye-lo le.lo.him:

Because Moses was the messenger of His Name to Israelites, so Moses must tell God's Name using the the 3rd personal pronoun as HE IS / HE WILL / HE EXIST = יהוה = Y-H-V-H.

It consists of Hebrew letter YOD-HEY-VAV-HEY.

And these 4 letters are called Tetragrammaton.

How do we sound this YOD-HEY-VAV-HEY?
How do we sound Y-H-V-H?

In Hebrew grammar there is Ketiv and Qere.
Ketiv is "what is to be written".
Qere is "what is to be read".

And both must be correct. It is because part of the Torah not to use the Name of God in vain.

Exo 20:7  KJV
Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

Exo 20:7  CJB
ג "You are not to use lightly the name of Adonai your God, because Adonai will not leave unpunished someone who uses his name lightly.
On account of this, we are sure that the Name of the LORD would not be taken in vain.

The Jewish tradition is to not pronounce the sacred Name at all, but to substitute the word Adonai ("my Lord") in its place. Thus, when reading Torah, you do not attempt to vocalize the Name, but say Adonai instead. When not reading Torah or the Siddur, most observant Jews refer to the sacred Name simply as HaShem or "the Name" (Lev 24:16).

Lev 24:16  KJV
And he that blasphemeth the name of the LORD, he shall surely be put to death, and all the congregation shall certainly stone him: as well the stranger, as he that is born in the land, when he blasphemeth the name of the LORD, shall be put to death.

Lev 24:16  CJB
and whoever blasphemes the name of Adonai must be put to death; the entire community must stone him. The foreigner as well as the citizen is to be put to death if he blasphemes the Name.

Is it Jehovah?

On account of this, the Masoretes ensured that the Name of the LORD would not be taken in vain by substituting the vowel marks for Adonai and putting them under the letters YOD-HEY-VAV-HEY in the running text (this is called Qere [what is to be read] as opposed to Ketiv [what is to be written]). The Hebrew text, then, contains the Ketiv but uses the vowels of the Qere ALEPH-DALET-NUN-YOD.
The word Y-H-V-H is combined by the vowel from A-D-N-Y becomes  Y-H-V-A-H and this has led to the obviously incorrect pronunciation of the Name as "Jehovah" (in older English, "J" had a "y" sound).

But the real Name is not "Jehovah". It is Y-H-V-H and to be read as ADONAI.

Is it Yahweh?

Yahweh is most likely also an incorrect transliteration, since there is no "w" sound in Hebrew.

This is the Hebrew letter and notice there is no "w" in Hebrew.

ketav Ashurit

They who are teaching the Name of Yahweh are against the Hebrew root, since they are against Exo 20:7, taking the Name in vain.

To understand the Hebrew root, we must understand also that in Hebrew there is Ketiv and Qere.

The Ketiv for the Name is YOD-HEY-VAV-HEY (Y-H-V-H).
The Qere for the Name is ADONAI.

May God bless you in your study.

Blessing in Yeshua's Name
