Mat 5:20
For I say unto you, That EXCEPT YOUR RIGHTEOUSNESS shall exceed the RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE SCRIBES and PHARISEES, YE SHALL NO CASE ENTER INTO THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN.
PHARISEES, in Hebrew is PERUSHIM, comes from the word [פרוש - PARUSH], meaning SEPARATED.
A PHARISEE is a school of thought among the Jews on the the Second Temple Era (536 BC–70 AD). The prophet Ezra the Scribe and the men of the Great Assembly (כְּנֶסֶת הַגְּדוֹלָה) are considered the precursors of the PHARISEE movement.
The PERUSHIM focused on the TORAH and what it requires of ordinary people. They didn't focus on the Temple ritual.
This is the kind of character that Lord YESHUA / JESUS gives reward to them..."FOCUS on the TORAH".
