Di dalam Mishnah, Rosh HaShanah dijelaskan bahwa ada 4 tahun baru di dalam siklus kalendar bangsa Yahudi, dan salah satunya adalah Tahun Baru Tanaman (Rosh HaShanah HaEtz).
Mishnah, Rosh HaShanah 1:1
"There are 4 Rosh HaShanahot. The first of Nisan is the Rosh HaShanah for kings and holidays. The first of Elul is the Rosh HaShanah for animals for the tithe. Rabbi Elazar and Rabbi Shimon said, “The first of Tishri [is the Rosh HaShanah for tithe animals].” The first of Tishri is the Rosh HaShanah for years, Shemitah, Yovel, for planting and for vegetables. The first of Sh'vat is the Rosh HaShanah for trees, according to Beit Shamai. Beit Hillel says it is on the fifteenth [of the month]."
Halakhah mengikuti Beit Hillel, yaitu tanggal 15 Sh'vat.
