Shalom,
Rev 9:11 KJV
And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.
Abaddon :
Strong's word G3. Abaddon is a destroying angel; a perishing angel from Sheol (Hebrew word for : Hell).
Apollyon :
Strong's word G623. Apollyon is a destroyer that is, Satan.
So, basically, Abaddon and Apollyon is Satan himself, a Destroyer or Destroying angel.
And interestingly, there is an island in Iran named Abadan island where Euphrates River and Tigris River meet, join and empty into Persian Gulf.

The Euphrates River originates in the Taurus Mountains and flows through Syria and Iraq, eventually joining Tigris River in the Shatt al-Arab and emptying into the Persian Gulf. The apocalyptic prophecy that mentions the loosing of the 4 angels reveals that a Destroying angel named Abaddon/Apollyon will be released from the abyss near the same time these 4 angelic being are released from their captivity, where they are confined in caverns under the waters of the Euphrates.
The name Abaddon in Hebrew and the name Abadan Island, there may be a linguistic link to this island and also the releasing of the spirit Abaddon from a black-smoke-filled pit.
Since the location is near the Euphrates, which is mentioned by name in the prophecy, the spirit called Abaddon could be bound under the earth in this region.
Remember, the strong prince spirits often take on the same name of the region they control, such as the prince of Persia in Daniel 10:13.
Dan 10:13 KJV
But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia.
The prince of Grecia in Daniel 10:20.
Dan 10:20 KJV
Then said he, Knowest thou wherefore I come unto thee? and now will I return to fight with the prince of Persia: and when I am gone forth, lo, the prince of Grecia shall come.
When this "pit" in Revelation 9:1 is opened,
Rev 9:1 KJV
And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.
then the black smoke fills the air, darkening the entire area. Because Abadan Island is used to refine oil, any form of explosion could literally cause the black smoke to billow into the atmosphere, thus fulfilling the visual description given by John in Revelation 9:2.
Rev 9:2 KJV
And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.
Now, we are on our way to see the fulfillment of John's prophecy, but before that, let us prepare ourselves because our Lord is coming to rapture His Brides.
